Love A.D.D.erall

At 21 they diagnosed me with AD/HD & gave me smart pills. My grades shot up & my future brightened & some said I was better. But I am numb inside of this drug. People I love become distant strangers sometimes, so proud of me for victories I didn’t earn. How do I tell them I am not what I do or have done. I’ll never be happy on this drug, but I’ll never be successful without it. If only I could Love Adderall.

Adderall and Bad Breath

Adderall is known for its ability to improve focus and concentration, as well as for its major negative side effects–increased heart rate, dehydration, anxiety. But we hear very little about some of the more minor side effects or, if you will, the “side effects of the side effects.”

One side effect of dehydration, for instance, is bad breath. The more dehydrated you are, the drier your mouth becomes and, without saliva, your breath stinks!

Obviously, bad breath is not such a big deal that it warrants discontinuing your medication. You probably won’t even realize it, but people around you will.

Nothing is more nauseating to me than a person with bad breath. I’d much rather be known as the guy with B.O. than as the guy who always has bad breath.

What I found on adderall is that the normal ways a person fights mouth odor (gum, mints, breath strips, mouthwash, etc.) don’t work with the type of bad breath brought on by dehydration. These strategies which do not eliminate the problem but simply mask it.

The only thing that works to my satisfaction is constantly drinking water or some other liquid. This is the best remedy because it prevents not just bad breath but all the problems related to dehydration as well.

I think all stims do this, not just Adderall. My dad is a dentist and has mentioned that he can tell meth users by their breath.

Drinking lots of water definitely helps. When water gets boring, there’s always low-sugar options. I’m currently on a watered-down tang kick. I don’t think it’s just dehydration that’s behind the breath problem. I think stims affect oral health in some other way (e.g., increase tooth decay, stimulates bacterial growth, etc.).

  M. Frederick Voorhees wrote @

Wow–so your dad finds stimulant-related bad breath different from regular, garden-variety bad breath? I always thought there was a spurious relationship between bad breath and tooth decay–that both were caused by dehydration–but it obviously makes sense that bacteria caused by tooth decay would add to the stench. But bad breath from stimulant occurs even in the very short-term, before tooth damage is likely to be a problem.

I can only presume my dad meant long-term meth users have a unique form of halitosis.

I think the point you’re getting at is that it’s possible that the proximal cause of bad breath depends upon the duration of use.

Just another reason to take stim holidays on weekends, I guess!

I understand from my dentist that there are some new products called “biotene,” formulated to combat bad breath/dry mouth bacterial buildup. They include toothpaste, gum, and mouthwash. Other antibacterial mouthwashes (such as BreathRx) are also as good, apparently. If increased water intake and these interventions aren’t effective enough, there is also a new medication (spray mist) which can be prescribed by your doctor named “aquoral.”

Man, I get horrible phlegm in the back of my throat when I take adderall (not prescribed, heavy homework helper). I think it’s related to the dry mouth. Either way, sh** is annoying as hell. I can’t get it out and it awkwardly tickles the back of my throat all friggin day. WHat can be done besides water?

  M. Frederick Voorhees wrote @

Well, there’s that “biotene” stuff that somebody suggested above. I’m not sure if it works or not; sound like it might be a bullshit marketing ploy. Lots of time products like that are on the market just long enough to make a quick buck. We as consumers will swear by placeboes if we’re desperate enough for cures, or the perception thereof! Just know that bad breath usually follows dry mouth, so if you have the latter you’ll probably have the former! Conventional toothpaste & mouthwash absolutely positively will not work, and I believe tend to actually make it worse. The only dependable, remedy that I can vouch for is water.

My boyfriend says my breath stinks and I will do anything but quit taking adderall so if anyone knows if this aquoral works please respond to me.

Hello!
I think this try.

I think stims also cause tooth decay and bad breath, because of their effect on your sympathetic nervous system, which decreases production of saliva.

  M. Frederick Voorhees wrote @

Anon-
In addition to the saliva decrease issue, it also causes teeth grinding, so yeah, Adderall is bad news all around for people who care about their teeth

i don’t know if any other women have noticed, and by the way, i didnt’ notice my breath either until my ex mentioned it, but i had noticed my “femine ” smell had changed. adderall apparently changes the chemistry, hence the smells. i was never a big sweater and thought i had nice musky perspiration smell, but the second day on adderall i was looking all over the office for the wet cardboard until i realized it was me. i am not going to change me meds, just wondering if any other women out there have noticed a similiar change…..

  phyllis wrote @

Yeah I noticed more dryness of the female lower lips, probably that has to do with what you’re talking about. Same reason as dry mouth; More concentration=more smell, though I haven’t noticed that so much as the difficulty with lubrication. However, that has gone away as my body has adapted more to the medication. I have started taking it consistently (after much prodding) this month, so my body seems to be able to weed out the side effects.

  PreMedAA wrote @

Wthout a ABO chem and urinalyss work up one can’t sure whats actually changed, but as an Adderall XR user (30-60mg/day) I have to say I noticed a rather rapid onset of such ackward body-chemistry changes as well. My urine is infrequent, dark and certainly now ‘pungent’ as opposed to its previously pale yellow and scentless presentation. Lydia mentioned a change in her ‘femine smell’ and I would report the same sort of thing, my gential scent didn’t so much change as become more potent, thankfully its not particularly aversive. Body odour during perspiration and bad breath seem to be staples and it’s probably safe to say that in most cases it’s due to a combination of depressent effects on the CNS and the subsequent dehydration, which if you’ve recently had a nurse attempt to start an IV line on you…your all too aware of. ( >.<)

Increaed fluid intake may or may not be enough and without the internal initiative to drink this may be difficult. Best to discuss the matter with your prescribing physician, or in the cases of the non-prescription users with a physican or pharmacist who can be held in confidence in regards to your abusive use of the drugs.

listen, I have heard all of your claims. I am a pharm. student who is quite familiar with this medication -moreso than pharmacists and doctors. Yes, there is a decrease in saliva production via use of stimulant products such as adderall. Yes, there will be bacterial build up do to this lack of innate immunity -more specifically tooth decay- more specifically back molars (just had a root canal few days ago -came out of no where). I am about to try the Biotene mouth wash. In theory, it does sound correct. The idea of replenishing oral normal flora may lead to a defense mechanism that probably is missing in patients taking adderall. Furthermore, those nasty “phlem” buildups in the back of your throats are not phlem. They are bacteria that are culturing in your crypts located in your oral pharyngeal area. (i am guessing you have never had your tonsils removed) -Pretty disgusting stuff, -I have been experiencing them for years. Keep using mouthwash and brushing your teeth. (increased water intake may increase your urination/clearance of drug/ and terrible withdrawal after effect that you experience once the medication (generic salts combo esp.) wears off. I will repost a comment concerning the biotene after I have tried it out.

Good points, someone. It’s not that Adderall causes the problem directly; rather, it brings on dehydration, thus preventing saliva from doing its normal job. So these bacteria are more likely to thrive in those circumstances.

And the tooth decay issue really is an overlooked problem. I never realized how important saliva is to making sure our teeth don’t rot and fall out.

Here’s a really informative CNN article about saliva and all its uses:
“Spit Happens: Saliva’s Mysteries Revealed.”

There you are, no intent to be rude, but are you kidding, I have to sign up to one of the contact routs just to ask you a question. If you say no I wont bother. I apologize for my spelling and grammar, Its late, and I suck at English anyway. I posted the long post below, quickly, I have spent many month and years gathering information on adderall. I too was diagnosed late in my life for ADD, anyway, my question is have some very well founded and solid information, I would rather send it to you than to post it myself. Regards.

I’ve found brushing my teeth and/or rinsing with baking soda gets rid of dry mouth ( including cotton mouth) instantly and makes my salivary (spit) glands kick in. My mouth actually feels wet and “right”. My only problem is remembering to do it.

  LUIS wrote @

This is certainly true. The bad breath caused by Adderall is not eliminated by the “usual
means”. My case is that the bad beath
even comes out through my nose.

I found the part of the solution in a “dirt-cheap’ $9.00 ebook after spending hundreds
on TheraBreath products. The guy above is
right. Use Baking Soda. But fir a greater punch,
makev a toothpaste of Baking Soda combined
with Hydrogen Peroxide. This will oxiginate
your mouth for hours.

But the bad breath from my nose is not so easy. I gave you’s a suggestion. Now someone
give me one.

Regarding dry mouth, one of the side effects of Adderall and older tricyclic AD, water and fluid intake should be increased. Actually since all drugs have side effects, plenty of water should be consumed to “keep the drugs movin” in the system and flushed out.

High quality grape seed extract drops diluted in pure water, sold on Amazon and gargled daily can normalize the ph of the mouth and help with the dryness. Dr Katz oral products are good also for breath, taste and dry mouth problems.

Also, proper amounts of vitamins and mineral supplements may help. Some people need them, some don’t/

Be sure to eat at least one large salad 3-4 times weekly with spinach, red leaf lettuce, parsley, vine tomatoes, celery, radishes, sprouts, raw mushrooms, cilantro, etc. with a fine extra virgin olive oil and organic dark vinegar dressing. One biologist reported human beings need at least 1/4 cup of chlorophyll or “green juice” everyday to keep the system in balance.

Too much sugar, and white flour products in the diet can make the mouth “dirty” and green veges really are good for the mouth and teeth/gums.

As someone mentioned earlier “those nasty phlem buildups in the back of your throats are not phlem. They are bacteria that are culturing in your crypts located in your oral pharyngeal area”, I’ve been having trouble with that too. I started noticing that I was spitting out these nasty little white chuncks that smelled just nasty ( I almost vomited the first time I smelled it). A quick search online gave me a name for those little skunk balls. They’re referred to as “tonsil stones”, they come from that bacteria culturing. I almost gagged when I looked in my mouth and noticed I could see some white (cottage cheese like) chunck on my tonsils (or my oral pharyngeal are). I like adderall, but I care about my teeth much more. Any suggestions for alternatives?

Hello,

I am not a doctor, but have researched this Rx for a long time. I hope my accuracy and information can help in some way. Please check with your doctor before considering my information for use. The obvious basics Eat, and eat a good diet, too often the suppressed apatite can start to create deficiencies in diet, and can just forget to eat all together. Eat or snack regular as well as preferably drinking non-acid beverages. Of course brush your teeth normally; I do twice a day like I always have. I no longer have any problem with this anymore. I also found it necessary to also be moderate with the amount of water I was drinking. This actually can severely increase your blood pressure far beyond what a typical adderall dose can do. Also this happens to be one of the methods used in high blood pressure medication. A diuretic also know as a water pill to get rid of excess water in order to lower blood pressure, and used for water gain during a woman’s menstrual cycle. These BP medications can cause terrible urine odors. Vitamin supplements especially B also causes strong urine odors. These can even be detected in sweat and the breath for the same reason. Dehydration will concentrate the odor compounds as well. I will try and finish up here, anyway, after all that the strange smells that I could still not seem to find, and what I thought was breath, stumped me for a while. It turns out to be another side effect of adderall that it alters your perception of taste and smell. Keep in mind this effect that it also has. Finally, I haven’t had anymore problems of side effects with this medication anymore, however its much too involved to get into the details, so I will just list it. It is completely holistic, and involves 3 of the essential amino acids. I take them by choosing foods and not take supplements, but they are l-phenylalanine, l-tyrosine, and l-tryptophan. I don’t feel comfortable posting amounts, I will try and make contact with the owner of the page, and possible detail my findings. Regards, hope to help where I can.
